My current body of work, in keeping with my career as an abstract landscape artist, aims to capture the shifting mercurial patterns of water reflections. The rivers, lakes and oceans in my paintings are portrayals of those from my native Scotland, my new adopted home here in Canada and from travelling abroad.
I have always been drawn to water as somewhere to visit and somewhere to live, coming as I do from a small island nation. My love of its ever changing nature is balanced by my fear of and respect for its power and danger.
My process begins with the memory of the location that I am recreating: which colours had the most impact, how did the weather and season affect the scene, how was my mood and did it influence my viewing of the scene. The finished piece is thus as much a reflection of myself in the moment as of the place itself.
